Planning For Plastic Surgery

Planning For Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery can be done to correct your bodies imperfections but most women and men today are seeking it for cosmetic purposes aimed at improving their physical appearances. Plastic surgery is done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Most cosmetic surgeries are done on outpatient basis but you may also need to spent some days in the hospital after some procedures or incase complications arise. Cosmetic surgery may include improving facial appearances through nose surgery, eyelift among others. There are also other body contouring surgeries aimed at improving other parts of the body like tummy tuck for bulging abdomen and liposuction for eliminating fat pockets not responding to exercise or dieting.

Plastic surgery comes with its own benefits as well as risks and complications. To be on the safe side and for achievement of looks that will meet your aesthetic goals, have a board-certified plastic surgeon perform surgery on you. Dr. Bloch is a world-class board-certified plastic surgeon from Chicago with 30 years experience in cosmetic procedures. The doctor has successfully performed countless plastic surgeries in his accredited surgical facility.

Are you a good candidate for a cosmetic procedure?

Usually, you are a good candidate for cosmetic surgery if you are healthy, close to your ideal body weight, a nonsmoker, and are emotionally and socially in good shape. You should be exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s generally wise to have less than one alcoholic drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men, and to limit your caffeine. Alcohol is a mild blood thinner. Caffeine can slightly raise blood pressure. So cutting back on both is a good idea before surgery. Finally, you must understand and accept the disadvantages of cosmetic surgery such as cost, inconvenience, discomfort, and medical risk.

Preparation for cosmetic surgery

If you have made up your mind to get a cosmetic procedure, you need to have an appointment with a plastic surgeon to guide your way. However, before getting an appointment, the internet is a good source where you can get enlightened on the procedure you wish to have. Prior internet research will help you easily understand most of the details your surgeon will discuss with you during your consultation.

In your consultation meeting, your surgeon will:

  • Evaluate your general health
  • Enquire about your current treatments, previous surgeries and medications or supplements you are taking
  • Recommend lab tests
  • Take measurements and photos of your area needing treatment
  • Discuss the benefits, risks and complications of your procedure
  • Recommend a course of treatment
  • Ask you to quit smoking for two weeks before and after surgery– smoking slows healing
  • Ask you to avoid use of anti-inflammatory medications
  • Discuss on use of anesthesia
  • Inform you about after care visits

Dr. Bloch welcomes his patients to ask questions during the consultation. Consultation will help you develop a positive attitude towards your cosmetic procedure and your doctor will evaluate if your surgical expectations are realistic before enrolling you as a viable candidate for plastic surgery.

Insurance coverage

Patients who are contemplating cosmetic surgery should consider the costs carefully because most cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance. However, there are a number of procedures that are sometimes covered, depending on the purpose of the treatment. Eyelid surgery is nearly always cosmetic (and not covered), but if the patient needs it to improve vision, then it may be considered reconstructive and, therefore, could be covered by insurance. Such cases should be carefully documented with photos and records documenting field of vision. Patients who are unsure about how their surgeries would be categorized should discuss it with their surgeon. Insurance carriers usually require prior approval, and they may want to see photos and other extra documentation as well.
