Differences between Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus

There are four forms of Juvederm: Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. The XC formulations of both products have added lidocaine, an anesthetic to make the injection more comfortable.

The difference between Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus is that Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation, that is made for deeper and more severe facial wrinkles and folds that Juvederm Ultra. Juvederm Ultra Plus is ideal for deeper naso-labial folds, whereas Juvederm Ultra, a finer molecule, does very well in enhancement of the lips or filling fine wrinkles.

How are Juvederm injections performed?

Juvederm Ultra is injected directly in your skin using a fine needle. The injection is not painful as it has lidocaine, an anesthetic that will lessen the discomfort during injection. Your physician will choose the particular spots to be injected with the dermal filler. Next, a thin needle is used to inject generous amounts of the filler just beneath your skin. What can I expect after Juvederm Ultra injection?

After injection with Juvederm Ultra, Dr. Bloch advises his patients to avoid strenuous activities, alcoholic beverages and prolonged exposure to sun or heat. Avoiding these elements will prevent swelling, itchiness and redness on the injected site. Wearing makeup immediately after the injection is not recommended. You can, however, consult with your physician on when to wear makeup following treatment.

Juvederm Ultra has some mild side effects that resolve in less than a week’s time. Common complications include redness, infection risks, swelling, bumpiness, itching, discoloration, bruising, pain, and tenderness. If the redness and swelling continue for more than three days, consult with your healthcare provider immediately.
