Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure in which Dr. Bloch lifts the eyelids and removes excess tissue to reduce signs of aging. The procedure is also known as blepharoplasty. It can help you see better and restore your confidence.

Is eyelid surgery right for me?

To determine if eyelid surgery is the right treatment for you, Dr. Bloch reviews your medical history and examines your eyelids. You might be a good candidate for the procedure if you have:

  • Excess skin on your upper or lower eyelids
  • Droopy or baggy eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Low self-esteem associated with sagging eyelids
  • Drooping eyelids that affect your vision

Dr. Bloch might complete eyelid surgery during a facelift or brow lift to offer you the best results. With tighter, lifted eyelids, you can look and feel years younger.

How should I prepare for surgery?

Follow Dr. Bloch’s pre-surgery instructions prior to eyelid surgery. He might recommend a physical exam and vision testing. Stop taking certain medications and avoid smoking. Plan to have someone drive you home the day of eyelid surgery and stay with you the first night.

What happens during the procedure?

Right before eyelid surgery at Body By Bloch, you receive intravenous medicine that helps you relax. Dr. Bloch injects numbing medicine into your eyelids so you don’t feel any discomfort. He makes a tiny incision in the crease of your upper eyelid and removes excess skin or fat.

During trans conjunctival blepharoplasty, a newer surgical method, Dr. Bloch makes an incision inside the lid and removes excess fat with no visible external incisions. You can usually wear makeup within a week and resume normal activities after the procedure.

During lower eyelid procedures, Dr. Bloch might make an incision at the lash line or inside your lid to remove excess tissue. He can also use laser treatment to tighten and smooth fine lines. After the procedure, Dr. Bloch closes the incisions.

What should I expect after eyelid surgery?

After surgery, have a friend or family member drive you home. Follow Dr. Bloch’s post-surgery instructions. Take medications as prescribed and ice the treatment area.

You might experience temporary blurry or double vision, watery eyes, light sensitivity, swelling, bruising, numbness, and tenderness. Keep the treatment area clean and avoid strenuous exercise until Dr. Bloch says it’s okay.

Avoid smoking. Don’t wear contact lenses for about two weeks and avoid rubbing your eyes. Wear tinted glasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Swelling and bruising should go away within a week or two. Attend follow-up appointments at Body By Bloch.
