Print Page Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty in Chicago
When underlying abdominal muscles and skin are stretched, as often occurs after multiple pregnancies or large weight loss, abdominal muscles weaken and skin becomes flaccid and produces folds. The tummy tuck may be performed in combination with liposuction to reduce areas of fat accumulation in both men and women.
An incision is made across the lower abdomen than spans the hips. A second incision is made to free the umbilicus from surrounding skin so that it will remain undisturbed. Skin is then separated from the abdominal wall and elevated above the rib cage. To tighten the abdominal wall, Dr. Bloch brings loose underlying tissue and muscle together with sutures.
The elevated skin is lowered and the excess is removed. Dr. Bloch then makes a small opening for the umbilicus. It is positioned where the old one had been. Incisions are closed and a firm elastic dressing is applied.
You will be advised to wear a light support garment for two months and cautioned to restrict strenuous activity for a few weeks to ensure proper and complete healing. As a result of surgery, you will have a firmer, flatter abdomen and a narrower waist.
Sometimes a full abdominoplasty is not needed and an incision around the umbilicus can be avoided.
With the recent advent of laser assisted liposuction and its potential for skin tightening sometimes a less invasive procedure may be appropriate.
