LIQUID FACELIFT
By Dr. Steven Bloch
Over the years, the face begins to lose collagen and elastin, which results in sagging of the facial features. In addition, many patients begin to lose volume, creating folds and a generalized haggard or tired appearance.
Typically, the areas that lose volume are under the eyes or "tear trough," cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, perioral areas, and jawline. A facelift is an excellent procedure to correct facial laxity, but it does not restore facial volume. With the use of face injections, Botox, and advanced dermal fillers, plastic surgeons now have the means to resculpt the face to create a more natural youthful appearance.
In general terms, a liquid facelift can be used to:
- Restore facial volume and create a gentle lift.
- Reduce wrinkles or folds.
- Create a more rested appearance.
- Enhance the lips and mouth.
A liquid facelift involves the use of Botox in combination with dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvéderm, Artifil, Radiesse, Sculptra, Perlane, and sometimes fat transfer using the patient's own fat to restore volume and help the body regenerate its own collagen. Each of these dermal fillers has unique attributes that work in their own special way to contour specific areas of the face. The same skill and artistry that is required in a surgical facelift is required for a liquid facelift. This is not something that someone should consider having done at a "party."
It is also my personal bias that plastic surgeons are uniquely qualified to perform these procedures since their surgical experience gives them a better understanding of the anatomy and the aging process. In my practice, this is not something that I delegate to someone else. I perform all injections.
Not only is product choice important, but it is the role of the physician to take into account the patient's unique facial characteristics and expectations. Cost is certainly a factor and should be discussed. Patients' goals vary and can be tailored to match the costs and can be spread over time to achieve the results. The outcome can vary from subtle to astonishing.
